Systems Engineering – from an idea to its implementation

Support every step of the way.

SIGNON has a multi-disciplinary team from the Systems Engineering Department on hand to assist you at all times.
SIGNON is always here to support you with its interdisciplinary systems engineering team. Whether you’re just launching a forward-looking digitalization project or are in the critical implementation phase of introducing a modern train control system—you can rely  on us.

Digitalisation of control and safety technology

To ensure the sustainability and performance of the rail network, various initiatives and programmes aimed at digitalising the railway infrastructure have been launched across Europe.

These include programmes such as EULYNX, RCA (Reference CCS Architecture) and the ‘Europe’s Rail’ Joint Undertaking (with its ‘System’ and ‘Innovation’ pillars), which aim to automate systems for the safety, planning and control of rail transport. National programmes such as ‘Digital Rails Germany’ by DB Netz AG also pursue similar objectives.

SIGNON’s systems engineering solutions actively support these objectives, particularly in the areas of concept development and specification.

Train control

Train control systems play a key role in the seamless interaction of all components within the overall railway system: They ensure the safe monitoring of trains and rolling stock operating on the railway network, thereby making a significant contribution to rail safety.

Due to differing standards between countries or even within a single country, train control systems have existed in various forms for decades. In addition to different forms of monitoring, the level of development of the technology used also varies. These technical differences regularly present challenges for those responsible for operating existing systems or migrating to new ones.

SIGNON’s systems engineering solutions provide the right support in this area: from concept development through to system integration and commissioning.

Our services in Systems Engineering

Concept creation and requirements management

  • Creation of concepts for the use of novel technical systems (e.g. systems for automated rail operation)
  • Specification of requirements documents (e.g. functional and non-functional requirements)
  • Model-based specification with SysML / UML or ARCADIA, for example (e.g. digital signal boxes, light signals, free track detectors)
  • Further development of requirements (change management)
  • Assessment of requirements

Impact and conformity analyses

  • Drafting of impact analyses (e.g. safety, operations)
  • Drafting of conformity analysis (e.g. functional specifications for specifications, requirements for TSI specifications)

System integration and test supervision

  • Specification and implementation of test cases for the subsystem test, system integration and acceptance of control and safety technology systems
  • Planning and supervision of test runs
  • Evaluation of test runs
  • Analysis and evaluation of test anomalies
  • Concepts and assessments for the integration of subsystems into overall systems
  • Drafting of migration concepts

Commissioning

  • Drafting of commissioning concepts
  • Supervision of commissioning

Verification and validation

  • Verification of requirements
  • Verification of processes
  • Validation of requirements
  • Simulation: Creation of executable system logic models to test out and validate system behaviour
