Brenner Base Tunnel comparative study, electrification with AC 15 kV 16.7 Hz

2017, Switzerland

SIGNON conducted a study on the electrification of the Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) back in 2014. Back then, electrification with a 2AC-25-kV-50-Hz system was examined. As part of a new network study to be carried out, the comparative electrification with 15 kV 16.7 Hz, whilst also taking into account an autotransformer system (2AC), was also investigated beyond the national borders.

SIGNON provided the following services:

  • Data capture and adjustment of simulation model regarding:
    • Electric network data
  • Load flow simulation calculations over 24 hours:
    • Normal operation and 5 min freight train interval timetable
    • Failure of substations / frequency converters
  • Assessment and statements on measuring the railway power supply system regarding:
    • Voltage maintenance on the contact line
    • Sizing of UW, FU and ATS
    • Energy requirements
  • Technical comparison of various BBT supply variants in 25 kV and 15 kV
